More about our Compost

The Composting Process

Green MaterialsOur compost is made from 100% recycled green materials received on the composting site. Initially the green material is sorted to ensure that contaminants such as plastics are removed before the process begins. After sorting, the green is ready to undergo a rigorously monitored process including shredding, taking temperatures, turning and screening.
Windrows
The raw material is shredded, before being stacked into rows which we refer to as windrows. Sufficient space is left between each windrow, this is to enable them to be easily recognised and kept seperate from the next windrow. Temperatures are consistently monitored to track the progress of each batch.

For the first few weeks of the process, the windrow is consistantly turned and moistened as necessary to speed up the decomposition process. The temperatures are expected to be between 65 - 80 degrees celcius in order for the compost to reach sanitisation.

Windrow turningThe process and end-product have to meet strict rules in order to adhere to the requirements of the British Standard Institute's PAS 100 and compost quality protocol. Once sanitised and left for a set amount of weeks, the windrow is screened to remove oversize and refine the product. After screening, we send a sample off to be tested under laboratory conditions to ensure that the product meets the requirements.

A detailed analysis is available upon request. For any further enquiries please contact the office on (01793) 853 998.
Green Management

All green waste is processed through a shredder, before being stacked into rows to initiate the composting process.
Shredding
Each batch is stacked into a long windrow using a loading shovel.
Making Windrows
After the compost has been shredded and stacked into a windrow, the composting process begins inside the batch. Water is added when necessary and the rows are turned periodically to speed up the decomposition.
