Our Composting Process

Our compost is made from 100% recycled green materials received on site. Initially the green materials are sorted by machine or by hand to remove contaminants such as plastics, hardcore etc.

To initiate the composting process the raw green material is firstly shred; before being stacked into rows. Sufficient space is left between each row to encourage air to be drawn in from the sides and be released through from the row through the peak.

Oxygen, Moisture Content and Temperature are consistently monitored throughout the process of each row to track it’s progress.

For the first few weeks, the row is regularly turned and moistened as necessary to speed up the decomposition process and encourage aerobic conditions.

The temperatures are expected to be between 65 – 80 Degrees Celsius in order for the compost to reach sanitisation; which ensures that the weed seeds and any bad bugs are killed off.

The process and end-product have to meet strict criteria in order to adhere to the requirements of the British Standard Institute’s PAS 100 and Compost Quality Protocol.

Once sanitised the row will be regularly turned before being screened to remove any oversize materials and refine the product to a 0-15mm soil improver compost.

After screening, a sample is sent to an independent laboratory and tested as per requirements to ensure that the row in question meets the PAS100 criteria.
